Digital Marketing TERM:
Above the fold
Short Definition:
The part of your website people see before they scroll.
What It Actually Means:
“Above the fold” comes from newspapers—it’s the top half that’s visible on the newsstand. In digital terms, it’s what users see the second your website loads, before they scroll down. That could be your hero section, your headline, your CTA—whatever lives at the top of the page.
Why It Matters:
What’s above the fold is your digital first impression—and most people decide whether to stay or leave within seconds. If that first view doesn’t clearly show who you are, what you do, and why they should care, they’re gone.
A strong hero section should instantly answer:
Who are you?
What do you offer?
Who is it for?
Why should they choose you over someone else?
Want to learn how to do that properly? I’ve written a full guide on how to create the perfect homepage that walks through what makes an effective hero section, including real tips on writing a killer headline, using emotional imagery, building trust, and crafting a CTA that actually gets clicked.
Quick Tip:
Avoid using generic phrases like "Welcome to our website" in the hero panel. These messages add no value and can actually deter potential customers. Instead, use this space to immediately communicate what you offer and why it matters to your visitors.
